TopazOur loving Topaz has now passed on. A fatality of hurricane Maria. The stress and health concerns were too much for him. | DustyJanuary 2011- August 2017 | Dane - April 2, 2011Baby Dane was a member of our small group of Great Danes. Born to a breeder and rejected because she was deaf, Dane spent her 8 years at the rescue as a sanctuary dog. She was a sweet and gentle soul who is greaty missed! |

MaxMax is approximately 4 years old and recently became a sanctuary dog due to cardiomyopathic complications. He lived here as long as he could until his little heart gave out on June 9, 2014. We will miss this little guy! | LuckyLucky was rescued on Friday the 13th that is how she got her name. She is about 3 years old and was born with many birth defects. She was brought to the rescue and had surgery to correct several hernias, hip dysplasia and also she is lacking tear duct production. Unfortunately, she does not have enough abdominal muscle mass to keep her organs in place. She had a good 2 years at the rescue until she succumbed to her illness on May 1, 2014. | Largo 2001 - 2013Largo was rescued in 2001 on the road by the Lake in Villalba. She was just another puppy thrown away in the never ending dog overpopulation problem on this island. I brought her back to the rescue and started her rehab. She always had skin problems throughout her life, which we could never get under control. She spent her 12 years as a sanctuary dog at the Rescue seeing so many dogs an puppies come an go. Her life is now complete. We will miss her. |
Coqui | SweetieHi, I'm Sweetie. When I was found you could barely recognize I was a pup because I was so full of Mange and matted hair. Bonnie tried to put me back together and after living on the streets, it was the best 6 months of my life. Sadly it was so short, but with my enlarged heart and medications my little body just couldn't stay with here any longer. I was a sweet little girl and will be missed! | Roxy |
RomeoRomeo was 6 years old when his heart gave out. For three months he was love and cared for after being left at our front gate. Suffering from heart worm and lack of care, he was quickly surrounded by the love and attention he deserved. He was sweet and everybody loved him. | Dana - November 3, 2011 | Carolina |
CarolinaSeptember 2011 Carolina was without a doubt a shelter favorite. She was rescued from situation where she was kept crated night and day for breeding. She filled our hearts with so much laughter watching her run and play with the others like a puppy. She will be deeply missed and will forever have a special place in all of our hearts. | Luke 12/24/99 - 1/2/14Luke when he was first rescued in 1999 | Luke after surgery |
Luke in 2014It was late afternoon on Christmas Eve 1999. After checking the nearby dump on the way to my Vet's Clinic I called puppies....puppies. That was when I spotted Luke coming out from behind a big fuel tank covered in Saracoptic Mange and Rickets. LUKE has taken on being a Caregiver ever since his rescue. He is always checking his pack and cleaning what scratches or surgery's that need be cared for on his buddies. Luke died in January after being here for 15 years! | ScooterMy time in life was not easy. I was hit by a car and left for dead. I dragged myself to a house an rested till someone would help me. A woman came out of the house and took me to the clinic to be put to sleep. Bonnie saved me from death and brought me to the rescue where I was given a wheelchair. I became an Ambassador for Second Chance and attended many public events and even was in the paper. People would visit the rescue asking for the quirky lil' poodle in the wheelchair! | Sweet Scooter |
MahoganyIt began, as I lay behind a barb wire fence under an old' Mango tree with my two puppies. I was on a road where humans throw all types of dead animals plus garbage. My previous family threw me away on Thanksgiving Day with my puppies. The sun was high overhead when a car stopped and called to me, the day began to look better. I was picked up and carried into a car with my pups. That's how I met Bonnie. When she brought me back to the Rescue I was 34 lbs, a walking skeleton. | Scooter & MahoganyI had heartworm disease, I was starving and my left leg was deformed. After several months of rehab and heartworm treatment I recovered. My pups were adopted stateside and I became an Ambassdor for the rescue along with Scooter. We had 10 years together and you can see how we spent our last days comforting each other! Thank you Bonne for saving us! | Chief |
IncaMy Sweet Inca, My time with you was way too short according to my standards, even though I was lucky to have you for six years. No one could believe that you were a rescue that was left to live on your own on the streets. Yet you still gave so much love to everyone you met. You touched a lot of individuals and will be deeply missed by all. ~ Nina | ChispySweet girl rescued with her daughter Pinta. She had severe glaucoma along with some other health issues. She was rescued as a senior dog and was very happy here at the rescue. She died in 2014. Her daughter Pinta lives happily in Minnesota. | PeanutA tiny little peanut of a pup. Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. At only 3weeks old, he suffered the cruelty of being discarded like trash on the road. Weighing only 12oz, he could have been mistaken for a soda can. By fate, he was spotted that night, scooped up and brought into the arms of safety. He only lived a few days, but you can see how he touched Bonnie's heart in such a short little life. |
PeanutOnly 3 weeks old | JuniorOur sweet Junior. He was Bonnie's favorite. Strong, sweet and ever faithful. He lived a long life at the rescue and died in 2013. | SuzySuzy was surrendered to the Rescue, because her owners "thought" she was pregnant. She was diagnosed with severe Heartworm. We tried treatment but, it was very advanced and she was in a losing battle. Suzy was a beautiful chocolate lab that had never been given heartworm prevention. Unfortunately, this could have been prevented and her life would not have ended at the age of 4years old. A very sad ending to a very sweet and loving dog! |
Rojo | Sweet SophieWe were blessed to have had her and wish it could have been for much, much longer. - The Knox Family | PeteI was surrendered at the vet to be euthanized because I was deaf. In 2002, I was 2 years old, but my life was far from older. Bonnie & Ronda rescued me and saw from all the horrible abuse I had suffered the loss of one eye. Bonnie called me Pete because with the patch I looked like the dog from Lil Rascals. I lived to be 9 years old and I was such a sweet hearted guy to all the other rescues that passed thru our doors. |
Sweet Eve Pup | Dusty March 2004- August 2013On September 4, 2003, Bonnie rescued an 8 week old pup weighing only 9lbs. Bonnie scooped her up and gave her a second chance. Dusty tested positive for Ehrlichia, Doxycycline is the medication, unfortunately in young pups the side effect is "coffee stained" teeth. On one of my visits to the shelter in Puerto Rico I fell in love with this girl. Her stained teeth didn't bother me one bit. She was the best, super smart and polite. She died from Lymphona in 2013. My heart aches - Denise | Coqui Sweet PupCoqui died from pain she didn't deserve. The tortures of Parvo wore her down. Her little spirit passed beyond our rescue. Another sad case of neglect beyond repair. |
Wonderful MasonTo all the Mason fan club members, get your tissues ready. Mason had emergency surgery on New Years Day for a neurogenic bladder. (Due to his paralysis we could not get his bladder completely voided well enough. So the bladder wall became very inflamed & was bleeding) He came through the surgery very well. The sad part is his kidneys sustained a great deal of damage. Three weeks after his surgery on Saturday the 22nd we lost him. We are so sad to say goodbye! | MasonHe had a wonderful life with his family. He was given a wheelchair and they loved him unconditionally and took care of all of his needs. | JoanieNot every dog has a happy ending. This sweet girl could not overcome all the suffering and neglect she had endured and did not survive. She was surrounded by comfort and love in her last days here. |
DockerA puppy was born back in January 2008 by the docks in Puerto Rico. The docks are where a lot of pups end up mutilated in fishing machinery as they try to get food. He was brought into a loving home in Puerto Rico with his foster mom Deb. Very shy pup but very loving to the people who were consistent in his life. Deb and Docker became great friends and to let her know this when he gave her nose bumps. He was diagnosed with distemper which was incurable. He was her best friend and sadly missed! | Charity 2006 - 2013"THE MILLION DOLLAR BOXER" Charity was rescued of the streets of San Juan with several serious health issues. First, she had venereal cancer. Second, she was heartworm positive and third a year later diagnosed with urinary stones. Later on she developed a serious ulcer in her eye which had to be removed. In the end, the cancer took her life. Charity was by my side throughout the years and even with all these difficulties, she was always the GREATEST BOXER we ever knew! We will miss her | CDThe most beautiful dog in the world. Even though CD didn't have much hair, his owners thought he was beautiful and loved him unconditionally. |
CDHi Everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that we had to put CD to sleep last Thursday. He collapsed after a visit to the vets to figure out why he was losing weight and not eating. I rushed him back to the vets and after some emergency resucitation and X-rays they found he had a massive tumor in his abdomen. We didn't want to pursue all sorts of uncomfortable test and procedures during his last days and at the stage he was at he was at he most likely wouldn't have made it through the night | CD Sweet BoyI can guarentee you all that it was the most peaceful and gentle passing. We are of course devastated, but also relieved that he lived such a wonderful life with us. In the last month he spent most the time laying out in the sun with the cat, getting hand-fed chicken burgers, camping with us and at the dog park just the day before we said goodbye. Thank you all for being such vital parts of his life and truly seeing him for the beautiful guy he was. Sincerely, Liz | CochiseThere will never be another like you, my friend. Without your unconditional love and support, my days will dim. Bonnie |
Diva April 2002 - 2013I was as thrown away with my daughter Reba who was about a year old. We were purebred Doberman Pinchers tossed out like sack of Garbage at an abandoned house. We were starving, physically and mentally abused. We were rescued by two women and taken to the vet for immediate evaluation. Our checkups showed the daughter had a 22 gauge bullet in her rear leg and the other leg was fracutred. I had heartworm and a severely fractured femur. I also had several deep scars around my neck which indicated | Diva April 2002 - 2013I had been hit by a machete. Several months passed and my daughter was rehabilitated and adopted to a home in Seattle. I remained with Bonnie where we attended obedience classes and became a trained guard dog. Chocise and I would take many late night trips to the airport with Bonnie. Sometimes we'd be stopped at a Police Road Block. The Police looked at me and my partner Cochise and said “Nice co-pilots!” I spent 10 years at the rescue living with Bonnie but bone cancer took me in the end. | Reba & FamilyThis is Diva's daughter's Reba. She battled cancer for some time but when the vet gave her a couple of months to live, she hung on for another couple of years. Reba (aka Coqui) finally passed away about three weeks ago. She was sooooo sweet and such a good dog. |
