In Loving Memory

My Dad died on July 12th, 2010.  He was an avid animal lover.  He had Parkinson's for 10 years and was unable to see first hand the work Second Chance is doing in Puerto Rico.  He loved it when I brought my dogs to visit him.  In his honor we have asked that friends and family make donations to our rescue.
He will be greatly missed!

Inca
My sweet Inca,
My time with you was way too short according to my standards, even though I was lucky to have you for six years.  No one could believe that you were a rescue that was left to live on your own on the streets.  Yet you still gave so much love to everyone you met.  You touched a lot of individuals and will be deeply missed by all.

Kahlua

In loving memory of a special girl.  She and her pups were rescued off the streets of Puerto Rico, than adopted by a family and was so dearly loved.  Of her 3 boxes of toys, 1 was sent to Puerto Rico so the next lucky rescues could enjoy her bounty.  The other 2 were sent to state rescues in her honor.

    COCHISE
There will never be another
like you, my friend. Without
your unconditional love and
support, my days will dim.
                   Bonnie

Today we say  goodbye  to a
very good friend. Chief was a
guy that everyone got along
  with, human or otherwise.
After over 5 years with us,
it will be difficult to endure
days without his cheerful
 attitude, warm hugs, and
big kisses.
See ya' on the other side of
the Rainbow Bridge, big boy,
we'll miss you dearly.

It is with tremendous sorrow that we had to have our little Sophie put to sleep yesterday. She fell ill last week and went into kidney failure due to unknown cause. At three years old she packed a lot into her life; coming from the streets in P.R., rehab for five months, plane ride to the states, adoption, camping, beach romping, long walks, nursing home visits and general laughter- making for our whole family. She is missed terribly and will be for a long time to come. She had such a lively but sweet  character and excelled in bringing joy into our home.We were blessed to have had her and wish it could have been for much, much longer.

A puppy was born back in January 2008 by the docks in Puerto Rico, not
an ideal place for a pup to start his life. The docks are where a lot of pups end up mutilated in fishing machinery as they try to get food. The pup was given the name Docker hence being saved from the docks.  He was brought into a loving home in Puerto Rico with his foster mom Deb. Very shy pup but very loving to the people who were consistent in his life. Deb and Docker became great friends and to let her know this he would give her nose bumps.  Docker became our best friend and the best family dog you could ever hope for and or dream of.   Docker was diagnosed with distemper, a deadly and incurable disease.  It is extremely sad news that docker's health has decreased and he has been laid to rest.  My best friend you will be missed!

It's nice to know that on the other
side of the  Rainbow Bridge that all
impairments are mended.
Tommy could not use his hind legs
due to an accident. He'd been fitted
for a wheelchair but fell ill too soon
to make use of it.
We wish we could have kept him
around, since he was the sweetest
little guy you could ever meet but
we know that now he's keeping busy
chasing butterflies and doing what
ever young cats love to do.

Tuco

I
have Hope and Tuco's ashes on my mantle. These precious little loving souls changed my life forever!

                      Atrocrypha

When Thor was found in April'07
he was near death at 40 lbs, but
after nursed back to health he was
80lbs....and he repayed the debt
twofold.    A wonderful uncle and
friend to many who passed through,
helped heal their emotional scars
so they could go to a loving family.
Thor, at his size would daunt many,
but holding his huge head in my
hands only made me feel humble,
that he could be so abused and
still forgive. May we learn from
him and style our lives in fore-
giveness and tolerance...

     BUTCH AND ANGEL
5 years ago  I watched these pups born
to a mom that belonged to a commercial
farm so I was never able to rescue her.
4 years ago, she died of cancer, in my
arms.  My elderly aunt wanted to adopt
them and since  have been her constant
companions and protection.    Christmas
day a tragic accident took them from us.
Holding them,  till they passed,  all the
years of unprecedented behaviour toward
each other and us went through my mind.
I've  rescued and helped the shelter for
years.   I know when someone is special.
This brother and sister were extremely
special.
We will never get over the loss.

To everyone involved in the rescue and adoption of Sadie,

We can not say thank you enough for all that was done to bring Sadie into our home and hearts. Although we were only with her for a short time she was such a part of our family. She had the sweetest dispostion, was extremely smart, and great with the kids and other pets.  We feel honored to have been chosen as her "Forever Family."

A special thanks to Emilie for finding such a perfect dog for our family. From making special arrangements for us to meet Sadie to keeping in touch with us through the whole adoption process and for the last few days offering your support.

Sincerely,

The Cushman Family

Mae in Puerto Rico

Mae was our greatest gift and meant the world to our family . So many people have told us how lucky she is that we rescued her, but we feel that we were the lucky ones and that she rescued us. In the short time we had her, she touched so many lives. Our vet, and the ladies who work at our vets office, had a very special bond to her as well and her death has caused us all great sorrow. I just wanted you to know that she was loved and happy. All the way to the end, she never stopped smiling.

Thank you for giving us this precious gift that will always be part of our lives.
